Musée du Protestantisme – De la Réforme à la Laïcité
Fontrieu
The museum route, from the Reformation to secularism, takes visitors on a journey through five centuries of history, the history of Protestantism, but also the history of France’s construction of religious pluralism, tolerance and secularism.
Description
Founded in 1968 and a Musée de France since 2003, the Musée de Ferrières is the first museum in France devoted to religion and secularism, based on the history of French Protestantism.
It is open to visitors of all faiths:
Why so much violence, instability, reversals and passion in France’s religious policy from Saint Bartholomew’s Day to the 2004 law on the wearing of ‘conspicuous religious symbols’?
The Museum’s itinerary, from the Reformation to Secularism, tackles questions such as: What is religion? What are the links between politics and religion, and how can they be broken? The origins of power and legitimacy? What recourse do we have to religion then and now?
This journey through our history has been designed with the certainty that knowing one’s past and that of others is one of the best ways of learning to live together.
In 2024, the Museum will offer a new space, housing a printing collection owned by the Département du Tarn.
Before or after your visit, we recommend a goose game, located 30 metres from the museum car park.
