Vabre
Vabre, on the banks of the river Gijou, has kept its mountain character with its granite-framed houses, its belfry and its restored wash houses. The village has the particularity of being on the edge of the Sidobre massif and the Monts de Lacaune.
Description
A historical trail of approximately 2 km invites you to discover the historic village of Vabre from the Middle Ages to the times of the Resistance which led this village to be recognized as « Villages of the Righteous » following the Second World War.
From its vestiges of the most distant past (the Clock Door from the 13th century) to nowadays, Vabre has crossed the centuries, witnessed the wars of religion (houses on rue Vieille 17th century), to the Golden Age of spinning (19th and early 20th centuries) and of the Maquis, particularly during the Second World War when the village was very active.
In that dark time, the exemplary attitude of residents who hid and protected around a hundred Jews earned Vabre as a member of the network of Towns and Villages of the Righteous since 2015 (in July and August, it is possible to visit the Maquis Exhibition during the opening hours of the Tourist Information office).
Don’t miss the 14-stage historic tour to find out more.
In 2018, the village was labeled a “starred village” for its energy saving policy and reduction in light pollution.
Sidobre granite workers, masonry companies and many other activities mark their presence within the Artisanal Zone and the Business Hotel.
