Water sites

Small or large, wild or peaceful, natural or man-made, if you’re looking for a water-based activity, Sidobre et Vallées will suggest you a wide selection.

Our numerous lakes almost make us forget the fragile richness of water…
This richness is preserved here!
Take a refreshing break and discover the countless lakes in Sidobre et Vallées.
Le Merle, les Saints-Peyres, la Broussonnié, le Lézert, Cambesse, Vialavert, Guyor… you’ll find plenty of lakes in the Haut-Languedoc.
There is no lack of jumps and waterfalls, with some truly picture-postcard scenery:
The Saut de la truite (La Ferrière), the Cascade du Paradis, the Saut de la truite (St Michel de Léon), the Cascade du Vialou…

In the Sidobre, water infiltrates cracks and diaclases (fractures), accentuating the erosion of the granite base. This disintegration of the granite leads to the formation of granitic arena (sandy residue of minerals). All this material is carried further away by rainwater, with some balls balancing on top of others.
The Sidobre range was sculpted by water: it is made up of hollows and humps, with varying degrees of wrinkling. On this multi-faceted base grows an equally varied vegetation: oak, chestnut, beech and birch woods, fern and gorse moors.
Relatively well-watered, the area is irrigated by numerous small streams and springs, which transform certain meadows into sagnes/peat bogs (wetlands).
The two main rivers, the Agout and the Gijou, have also shaped our landscapes, shaping our charming little valleys.

Lac du Merle
This lake with its floating stones is a peaceful place where time seems to stand still. A haven of peace between oaks, pines and birches, in the mist of morning or the pink of sunset, this lake has been sung by many poets and is now one of the Sidobre’s landmarks. Lac du Merle (Blackbird lake) is a paradise for birds and aquatic wildlife. Magnificent white water lilies add to the lake’s fame. They are in bloom from June to September. You may also see a few dragonflies or a viviparous lizard.

Lac du Lézert
A small fishing lake that you can walk around (approx. 20 mins).

Lac des Saints-Peyres
Undoubtedly the wildest of the Tarn lakes, it’s so big but so little developed that you won’t be able to walk around it; yet it’s a magical place to relax and find yourself in the heart of nature.

La Broussonnié lake
This lake, classified as a fish farm for tourists, is also a great place to take a stroll in the heart of nature.

Other lakes to see in the area: Lac de Vialavert, Lac de Cambesse, Lac de Guyor.

A real fisherman’s paradise. You can find our main fishing spots in our fishing booklet available in the « download our brochures » section or on request from our tourist information offices.
